I thought it would be a good idea to write about what money actually is, and why people are working so hard to earn more money.
Let’s face it, we all love money. Money allows us to purchase products/ services that make us happy, and make us feel good about ourselves.
I’ve always wanted to be wealthy when I grow up. Obviously, it’s not as easy – especially if you are coming from an average family.
Money is an interesting topic, because there’s no limit. I’ve been thinking to myself, why do I want so much money?
I want a better car. I want to live in a bigger house. I want a better computer. I want more clothes. I want new phone, the list doesn’t stop.
Then I started thinking, I already have a smartphone. I don’t have a car but I’m travelling to work and back just fine. I want more clothes, but I have enough clothes and no one is saying anything bad about my clothes.
Then I’ve realised, my temptation will never stop. If I was to buy a new car, within few years I would want buy a better one. If I get a new smartphone, within a year or so I would want to switch to a brand new phone again. Even with clothes, I will get bored of the clothes I buy and I will feel tempted to buy new one.
I remember coming across one of Jim Carrey’s quote. He said “I think everybody should get rich and famous and do everything they ever dreamed of so they can see that it’s not the answer”. I started thinking deeply about this quote, and somehow I could sort of understand where he was coming from.
I imagined myself with 10 million dollars. I would go crazy. I would buy a mansion, I would buy a yacht, I would buy an expensive 4wd, get myself a nice 100 inch T.V., etc. Initially, I would be so happy and entertained at everything I buy.
Then I started thinking – will this happiness be eternal? Absolutely not. You feel happy and entertained because it’s new & fun for the time being, and you feel like you’ve accomplished something. Eventually, you’ll feel normal again. In fact, for some people it could be worse because you just raised your standards super high. If something bad happens to you and it affects your financial situation, you will have so much difficulty lowering your standards.
And I think this is what Jim Carrey was saying when he said this quote. Yes money can bring temporary happiness, but that’s not the answer to your life. That happiness won’t last long, and it can actually have a negative affect because your standards have become so high.
Some people use money to show people how wealthy they are. Yes this is fine, but some people may find you annoying. They may think of you as some sort of a show off.
When it comes to money, it really depends on each individual. But for me, money shouldn’t be spent on fame, or on excessive luxury treatment. It should be used so you can live comfortably, financially supporting what you are passionate in, and helping the loved ones.
This includes paying off all the bills, not worrying about rent or mortgages, and whatever you are passionate in – whether it’s travelling, blogging, DIY projects, etc.
Money is really powerful, and it should be used wisely. It can destroy you, or save you. As for me, I just want money so I can live comfortably, without the fear of not being able to pay my rent. Yes I have my standards, but for me it’s more important to have these standards low so I can maintain a low-cost life.
You just don’t know what can happen to you. So when you do have money, better to pay off all your debt and have some emergency savings!
Conclusion: Use money to live comfortably. Don’t spend it too much on luxury or fame. Save money so you can have sense of security. You can invest into other business ventures – but just be careful that you are making the right investment.
That’s all! What are your thoughts on money? Would love to hear about it below!
